Claiming that around 33,000 trees will be axed for the proposed Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) project, an NGO has sought a detailed project report from the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).

Bengaluru police registered an FIR against commonwealth gold medallist and international badminton player Lakshya Sen for allegedly falsifying his age.
A complaint was filed by Nagaraja M G, who runs the Sri Sai badminton academy. The police registered the FIR after the 8th ACMM court directed the police to investigate the matter. As part of a slew of measures initiated to reduce travel time and ease traffic in Bengaluru, police are addressing the long-standing problem of vehicle congestion near schools in the central business district and other areas.

The visit of two Shiv Sena MLAs from Maharashtra to Belagavi, scheduled for December 3, to address issues pertaining to the border dispute with Karnataka, has been postponed to December 6. Chandrakant Patil and Shamburaj Desai were scheduled to visit Belagavi on Saturday but have postponed the visit. Patil has cited an invitation extended by Ambedkarite organizations to attend an event to mark the death anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar on December 6 as the reason for the rescheduling of the visit. Patil announced the postponement on his social media account.

The National Investigation Agency has taken over the probe into the November 19 Mangaluru auto-rickshaw blast that injured two, including the prime suspect, officials said.
The Islamic Resistance Council (IRC), a little-known outfit, has reportedly claimed responsibility for the blast, saying one of its ‘Mujahid brothers Mohammed Shariq’ attempted to attack a ‘Hindutva Temple in Kadri’.
In the incident, which took place under the Kankanadi police station area, the auto driver and alleged prime suspect Shariq were injured.
Police had called it an act of terrorism, invoking a stringent provision of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and held the passenger, Shariq, responsible for the incident.

Amid allegations of irregularities and voter-data theft in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) limits, the Election Commission extended the last date for filing claims and objections in the three Assembly constituencies in the Karnataka capital.
While the period for filing claims and objections was from November 9 to December 8, it is now extended till December 24. The final electoral rolls of these constituencies will be published on January 15, while it will be published by January 5 in others.

The Karnataka Skill Development Corporation (KSDC), in association with the Karnataka Digital Economy Mission (KDEM), on launched the Karnataka Skill Connect Portal (KSCP), an integrated web platform, connecting the entire talent eco system in the State with various employment prospects and skilling opportunities.
The KSCP would act as a comprehensive marketplace for students, industries, academic institutions, and trainers to collaborate in several ways, an official statement said.
The portal was created in consultation with industry stakeholders to first-hand address their concerns. Insights from established companies and up-and-coming start-ups provided the framework for the platform, the statement said adding these entities would contribute to the KSCP’s supply and demand and ultimately benefit from the portal.

Tomato and onion growers are a worried lot as the bumper harvest has led to a crash in prices in the state.
They are demanding a minimum support price for onions and tomatoes.
Onion prices had dropped to somewhere between Rs 2 per kg and Rs 10, a few days ago.
However, it has now stabilised in the range of Rs 12 to Rs 18 per kg depending on the quality of the produce.
Tomatoes are being sold from Rs 5 to Rs six per kg in the wholesale market while in retail, the prices are between Rs 8 and Rs 12 per kg.

Authorities at Gogte PU College of Commerce in Karnataka’s Belagavi said Thursday they will review the attack on one of its students who waved the Karnataka flag and that suitable action will be taken against the perpetrators.
“The college management has taken precautionary measures to respond to the emergency situation in time. The management consisting of the principal and other members will conduct a thorough review of the incident and appropriate action will be taken against the perpetrators responsible for the incident that took place on Wednesday,” the college said in a statement.
The statement was issued after a student of the college was allegedly beaten up by other students after he waved the Karnataka flag during an inter-college festival. The purported video of the attack on the student was shared widely online.
Subsequently, pro-Kannada outfits launched a protest demanding action against those who allegedly beat up the student. The outfits also alleged that senior police officers thrashed the victim who approached the police station to register a complaint.

Karnataka’s stand is that Maharashtra’s plea regarding the border issue is not maintainable and the same will be argued by the state’s advocates when the case comes up before the Supreme Court for hearing, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.
The Chief Minister also asserted that the state’s stand is both ‘constitutional and legal.’ 

The border dispute dates back to the 1960s after the reorganisation of states on linguistic lines.
Maharashtra laid claim to Belagavi which was part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency as it has a sizable Marathi-speaking population. It also laid claim to a number of Marathi-speaking villages which are currently part of Karnataka.

Pro-Kannada outfits launched a protest in Karnataka’s Belagavi Thursday demanding action against those who allegedly beat up a student after he waved the state flag during an inter-college festival. The incident comes at a time when there is high tension in Belagavi owing to the border dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra, and ahead of the Maharashtra ministers’ visit to the area on December 3.
This came a day after a video went viral showing a student of Gogte College of Commerce in Belagavi allegedly beaten up by other students after he waved the Karnataka flag. However, the police said there is no clarity why the student was attacked. (Read more)
City crime branch (CCB) police have arrested nine members of the notorious inter-state ‘Sahib Ganj’ dacoity gang while trying to loot a jewellery shop at Thokottu under Ullal police station limits here.
Police sources said the gang was trying to drill a hole into the shop’s wall. After receiving a tip-off that nine strangers were residing at a rented house at Manchila in Ullal, police raided the house and took them into custody.
The arrested have been identified as Bhaskara Belchapada (65) of Gandhiwadi in Gujarat, Dinesh Rawal (38), Bista Roop Singh (34) and Krishna Bahadur Bogati (41), all natives of Nepal, Mohammed Zamil Sheikh (29), Inmamam Ul Haque (27), Imaddul Razak Sheikh (32), Bivul Sheikh (31) and Imran Sheikh (30), all residents of Jharkhand. (PTI)
The Karnataka government on Wednesday informed the High Court that it needs more time to conduct the elections to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
Additional Advocate General Dhyan Chinnappa on Wednesday informed a single judge bench of the High Court that information has been sought from the Justice Bhaktavatsala Committee regarding the Backward Classes reservation.
The Commission has sought time to provide the details. Therefore, three months should be granted for the same. The HC on Wednesday adjourned the hearing to December 6. (PTI)
The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday permitted Datta Jayanti celebrations for three days from December 6 at the disputed Datta Peetha shrine in Bababudangiri Hills of Chikmagalur district.
A division bench comprising Justices Alok Aradhe and N Vishwajith Shetty granted permission for the celebrations to be organised under the supervision of a committee set up by the state government earlier this year. The Karnataka government approached the court for permission last week. (Read more)

The Bengaluru police will soon issue a notice to Rapido, an app-based bike taxi service provider, after investigators found serious lapses in employing riders with criminal history. The move came after a 23-year-old woman from Kerala was allegedly gang-raped by two men, including a Rapido driver, on November 25. The gang rape incident came to light Tuesday.
The police Tuesday said three persons, including a woman, were arrested in the case. They added that the prime accused was earlier this year arrested over a tiff with someone over water supply. He was then booked under Sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons), 341 (wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, some time back, he came out on bail. Read more
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) Southern Zone Wednesday directed the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) and the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to submit reports on measures taken to prevent the entry of sewage into the KR Puram lake.
The tribunal stated that if the reports were not submitted before the next date of hearing (December 16), then it would summon KSPCB and BWSSB officials.
“The reports should mention the compliance of the recommendations made in the earlier report by the Karnataka SPCB and the action taken by the BWSSB pursuant to the directions issued by the Karnataka SPCB and any other action plan to restore the KR Puram Lake. If the complete reports are not filed before the next hearing date… officials will be summoned to this Tribunal,” the order copy read. 
The NGT observed, “The Karnataka SPCB has also given nine recommendations for ensuring the survival of the KR Puram Lake. Whether they have been complied with or not (or) if any action taken in that regard is also not known.”
The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has directed the private firm that prepared the detailed project report for an upgrade of NH 748AA, which passes through wildlife-protected areas in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Goa, to get wildlife and forest diversion clearances. The Rs 229-crore project to be implemented under the Bharatmala Pariyojana programme involves two-laning of the national highway that links north Goa with Karnataka through Belagavi. On the basis of the report prepared by Louis Berger, the NHAI awarded the work to Gurugram-based NSC Projects on March 16.
The project passes through larger protected-area networks such as the Kali Tiger Reserve, Dandeli Sanctuary (Castlerock area), Bhimgad Sanctuary, Mollem National Park, Mhadei Sanctuary, Tillari Conservation Reserve, Chandgad Conservation Reserve, Radhanagari Sanctuary and the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve besides reserve forests spread across Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. 
After wildlife conservationist Giridhar Kulkarni filed a representation before the National Tiger Conservation Authority on July 13 highlighting the project’s consequences on wildlife, the authority in August directed the NHAI to seek wildlife clearance from the National Board of Wildlife. The work was scheduled to start in June.  
Renowned Yakshagana artiste Kumble Sundar Rao died at his residence here Wednesday morning, family sources said. He was 88. Rao is survived by wife, two sons and three daughters.

Rao, who was an exponent of ‘Thenkuthittu’ style of Yakshagana, had served as the president of the Karnataka State Yakshagana and Bayalata Academy. He was awarded Yakshamangala award from P Dayananda Pai and P Satish Pai Yakshagana Adhyayana Kendra at Mangalore University for the year 2018-2019.

Rao was also a member of member of the 10th Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Surathkal constituency from 1994 to 1999. He won the election on a BJP ticket. Rao’s body will be kept at his residence near Pumpwell in the city for people to pay their last respects. The final rites will be held on Thursday, sources said. (PTI)
A tussle between the transport department and cab aggregators over auto rickshaw fares has left commuters in Bengaluru in the lurch. The city, also known as the IT capital of India, is home to millions of working professionals who use ride hailing services such as Ola, Uber and Rapido to travel to work everyday.

On October 11, many commuters had to frantically look for alternative transport after the government barred ride hailing services from listing auto rickshaw rides on their platforms. Read more. 
Reacting to the demand of right-wing Hindu outfits to ban Muslim traders from the VV Puram religious festival in Bengaluru, BJP MLA Uday Garudachar Tuesday said all were free to trade in the country and such bans should not be imposed.

Notably, Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal activists have approached Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) chief Tushar Girinath and deputy commissioner of police (south) P Krishnakanth seeking a ban on the participation of Muslim traders in the two-day Subramanyeshwara temple festival, popularly known as the VV Puram festival, which started Tuesday. The Karnataka Forest Department has taken back the decision to offer safari rides in the buffer zone of Nagarahole Tiger Reserve. Spread over Mysuru and Kodagu districts, the reserve covers an area of 847.791 sq km.

The idea of coming up with a safari was mooted in March when the then director of the reserve, Mahesh Kumar, wrote to the chief conservator of forest, Vijaykumar Gogi, seeking permission to start the safari.

While the permission was granted, there was a huge uproar over the move from wildlife experts and farmers in Kodagu who believed that if buffer zones would be opened up for safaris, then the wild animals would land inside villages and it would give rise to man-animal conflict. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Tuesday said it will levy fines of Rs 25 lakh on agencies and Rs 10 lakh on individuals if they dug up roads without its permission.

Speaking with indianexpress.com, BBMP chief engineer (road and infrastructure) BS Prahlad said: “Rupees 25 lakh is the fine which will be imposed on an agency/company and Rs 10 lakh on an individual.

Even government agencies will have to pay the fine. Permission is mandatory for anybody to dig roads. However, before the fines are levied, the agencies or the individuals found to have committed the violation will be given the chance to present their side of the view before the BBMP.” Read more. 
To mark the occasion of Good Governance month in December, Karnataka higher education and IT BT minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan Tuesday announced that all universities in the state should start live streaming the academic council and syndicate meetings on their social media channels from next month.

The higher education department has plans to introduce a slew of reforms to mark the Good Governance month. “Aiming to bring in more transparency in the university administration system, live streaming of academic council, finance committee and Syndicate meetings would be initiated. Once implemented, this would continue as a regular phenomenon. The live streaming will be made through social media platforms,” the minister explained. Read more. 
A 23-year-old woman from Kerala was allegedly gang-raped by two persons, including a Rapido driver, in Bengaluru on November 25. Following a complaint, the police Tuesday said three persons, including a woman, were arrested.

The incident came to light the next day when the woman visited a clinic after developing body pain. By claiming that it may affect the investigation, the police withheld the names of the accused men who raped the victim and the woman who helped the duo and misled the police.

According to police sources, the 23-year-old woman, a freelance designer, had availed a bike taxi from her friend’s place. She was reportedly in an inebriated state. Bengaluru city police commissioner C H Pratap Reddy said, “Noticing that the woman was inebriated, the driver took her to his home where he and his friend raped her.” Read more. 
Vikram Kirloskar, an eminent industrialist and the vice-chairman of Toyota Kirloskar Motors, died after suffering a cardiac arrest late Tuesday. He was 64. Toyota Motors India confirmed his death.

On Wednesday, (November 30), the Supreme Court will hear arguments about the maintainability of a petition filed by the Maharashtra government, challenging some provisions of the State Reorganisation Act, 1956 and demanding 865 villages from five districts of Karnataka.

In Karnataka, tensions are high, especially in Belagavi district, which borders Maharashtra, and the police have beefed up security arrangements.

Maharashtra and Karnataka have sparred over the inclusion of some towns and villages along the state border ever since the State Reorganisation Act was passed by the Parliament in 1956. Centre for Advocacy and Research (CFAR) Tuesday organised a Clean Slum mission in Ambedkar Quarters in BBMP’s Nayandahalli ward.  Housing Minister V Somanna along with Anganwadi workers, BBMP Pourakarmikas and joined the cleaning drive.


The Karnataka transport department has issued a notice to cab aggregator services Ola and Uber and bike taxi aggregator Rapido after several passengers complained of surge pricing by autorickshaws operating under these platforms.

In its circular issued Thursday, the transport department has pulled up the aggregators for offering autorickshaw rides without licence and has given them three days to stop offering the service on their apps.

The department said cab aggregators and vehicle owners will henceforth be booked if they are found to be violating the government order. Read More

In order to reduce traffic congestion and improve last mile connectivity in Bengaluru, the World Resources Institute (WRI), India, is conducting research to see how bus services can be reorganised around Metro lines so both can complement each other rather than engaging in a competition.

Speaking with The Indian Express, Sudeept Maiti, Associate Director, transport, WRI India, said, “We regularly engage with Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) for a variety of transport research projects. We are engaging with BMTC and BMRCL to explore the impact of expanding the Metro on bus ridership in the city.” Read More
With an aim to streamline snake rescue operations in the state, the Karnataka forest department Monday released a manual titled ‘Effective Human-Snake Conflict Management and Mitigation – An Operation Manual for Certified Snake Rescuers’.

Through the guidelines, the forest department has reiterated the need to identify, train and certify genuine snake rescuers across the state and curb any illegal activities pertaining to snake rescue. Read More
A 23-year-old man, a native of Assam, was arrested last week after he stole Rs 19.96 lakh from an ATM kiosk in Bengaluru on November 17 to reportedly settle down with his girlfriend.

The accused was identified as Deeponkar Nomosudara who started living in Bengaluru six months back. According to the police, Deeponkar worked as a security guard of a Union Bank of India’s ATM kiosk located on the 13th cross in Wilson Garden area. Read More


Doctors at Karnataka’s S Nijalingappa Medical College have taken out 187 coins from the stomach of a 58-year-old man who complained of stomach pain and vomiting.

The doctors, who performed a two-hour surgery on Saturday after learning about the coins through an abdominal scan, said that Dyamappa Harijan, a resident of Lingasugur in Raichur district, was suffering from schizophrenia and had cultivated the habit of swallowing coins. Read More

Amid reports on plans for former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s biopic, the senior Congress leader himself on Tuesday gave credence to it, saying some people have approached him in this regard.

There are even reports that Tamil actor Vijay Sethupathi is being considered to play the role of the 75-year old Congress leader on the silver screen. However, things are yet to be finalised.

Reacting to a question on ‘Silent’ Sunil sharing dais with BJP leaders at a function in Bengaluru recently, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai asked the Congress leaders to count the number of rowdy-sheeters in their party. 
‘I have sought appointment with BJP National President J.P.Nadda and expect to get it tomorrow’, he said.
 
The CM said he will be meeting Union ministers, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Bhupendra Yadav and Rajnath Singh. With Gajendra Singh, union Jal Shakthi minister, he will discuss the Mekedatu, Upper Bhadra and Mahadayi projects. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be invited to open Sangolli Rayanna Sainik School, and is planning to meet another union minister regarding environment-related projects.
The Bengaluru city police arrested 23-year-old Deeponkar Nomosudara who allegedly stole Rs 19.96 lakh from an ATM kiosk in the city. The accused Deeponkar was working as security guard and deployed at Union Bank of India ATM kiosk, located in Wilson Garden Police limits. Deeponkar managed to track the password when the staff came to refill the cash in the ATM machine and later used the same to steal the money. He was later arrested by the central division police.
Bengaluru police have arrested a person in connection with voter data theft case, increasing the total number of arrests to 11. Halasurgate police said that they have arrested Anil, a representative of Chilume Educational Cultural and Rural Development Organisation on Monday. Anil was a close associate of Ravikumar, the NGO director. 
According to the police sources, Anil was allegedly involved in tampering the voter data base and impersonation. 
The state government on Monday had also transferred Ujjwal Kumar Ghosh, commissioner of treasuries as special commissioner (elections) BBMP. His transfer came after IAS officer Rangappa was suspended after the case came to light.

Two persons died on the spot after a garbage truck attached to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) knocked them down on National Highway 207 near Hulikunte gate in Bengaluru outskirts on Monday. 
The deceased were identified as M Mahesh, 35, and R Maruthi, 35, both residents of Maralukuntte near Sompura in Nelamangala taluk. The truck driver, who fled, was caught near Thyamgondalu — 15km from the accident spot. The incident took place around 4.30 pm when the victims were travelling on a two wheeler. 
The villagers staged a protest following the incident and demanded to shut MSGP waste tech park down where the garbage is being dumped everyday. The villagers who did not allow police to shift the body initially, alleged that the BBMP trucks on the roads are being driven rashly leading to such accidents.

A gang managed to decamp with gold and cash worth over Rs 3 crore from a bank on the outskirts of Bengaluru early Saturday.
The incident took place in the Karnataka Grameena Bank branch in Hosahalli near Doddaballapur under Bengaluru rural district. According to a complaint filed by branch manager Thanu Chowbay, the bank employees finished their work as usual on Friday at 5.30 pm and as the following day was the fourth Saturday, they were supposed to return to work only on Monday.
However, around 9.45 am Saturday, Thanu received a call wherein she was informed that the main door of the bank was broken. She along with another person rushed to the bank to find that the thieves had gained entry by breaking the rolling shutter.
“How can one be shaheed (a martyr) and enter heaven if he ends up dragging his family to the streets, leaving them in shambles,” wonders an aunt of Mohammed Shariq, 24, the accused in a November 19 blast in Mangaluru.
With tears brimming, she asks whether the family, left with only women after Shariq’s arrest and the death of his father Hasim Abdul Majeed three months ago, have seen the last of the police at their home.
Shariq was in jail for eight months in 2021 for an Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) case registered for writing provocative graffiti on the walls, and wanted in a September 2022 case of testing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Shivamogga. He is now at the centre of a new UAPA case over an accidental blast that occurred in an autorickshaw in Mangaluru this month while he was allegedly ferrying an IED.
