AN INTERIOR designer has caused a stir after calling a number of popular furniture and accessory items “tacky”.
Sophia deDomenico at House of D3 Interior Design has spilled all on easy interior design choices that are actually ruining the vibe of people's homes.
“I know tacky seems like a harsh word,” she said. “But I’m an interior designer and I’ve literally never seen anyone’s house that looks good with these things in it.”
“Don’t worry if you have these things in your house – I’m here to help you.
“I’m here to help you upgrade.
“I’m gonna give you the solution.”
The first thing she slammed was faux plants – a popular decoration choice for people wanting to bring greenery into their home without the responsibility of keeping a real plant alive.
“They can look great for a moment in a picture, but when you get into a real room with real lighting and real living, it just looks bad,” she said.”
deDomenico encouraged people to get low maintenance indoor plants instead, such as devil’s ivy, spider plants and peace lillies.
The second thing she slammed was word signs, dubbing them “placeholders” that people hang up to fill an empty wall.
The expert recommended hanging pieces of art, family photos or a map instead.
“When you go to fill your walls, you don’t want placeholders,” she explained. “You want personality.”
The third and final thing she bashed was accent walls.
“It just makes one side of your room feel extremely heavy and complete, while the rest feels unfinished,” deDomenico explained.
The interior designer shared her thoughts in a TikTok video but it ruffled a few feathers.
“Or hear me out….. have YOUR home how you want it without being called ‘tacky’,” one viewer responded.
“My home will have things I enjoy, not what is trendy,” a second said. “I don’t care if others think it is tacky.”
Other viewers warned against certain real plants being toxic to pets… and cats weeing in them.
