AN INTERIOR designer has revealed the three homeware trends you need to ditch right now – and it’s bad news if you love panelling.
We’ve all spotted those unique boucle chairs and squiggly mirrors on Pinterest, Instagram, and the like, wondering whether they’d be the perfect accessory to finish off our space.
But interior designer Marco is encouraging people to save their cash – and suggested that these trends will be on their way out as quickly as they came in.
And sadly he didn’t have high praise for the DIY trend we’ve all been giving ago, suggesting that panelling can very easily look ‘terrible’.
He said: “Furniture and home decor is so expensive, so here's a list of things that you do not need to buy or do to your home.
“You do not need a boucle sofa or accent chair.
“This fabric has gone trendy very quickly, and brands are overproducing furniture in boucle fabric.
“And with anything that trends that fast, it's gonna come down just as quick.
“So if you've been itching to buy boucle furniture, I'd recommend holding off or buying something secondhand so that you can experiment and see if boucle is even something that you like.”
Next up on his list of trends to avoid – DIY wall panelling.
Marco continued: “You do not need wall panel moulding.
“Wall panel molding has been trending over the last year, and people have been adding it to their walls in order to transform their apartments.
“And while it can look incredible, it can also look terrible.
“In order for this to look right, your home needs to have a certain type of architecture. Otherwise, it can look really out of place.
“Also, if your walls have any sort of texture, the wall panels won't sit flush and the wall panels will look even more out of place.”
Sadly the interior designer didn’t have high praise for unique, squiggle-shaped pieces either.
He added: “You do not need squiggly furniture.
“Whether it's a wavy mirror, a squiggly side table, or a blob rug – you do not need it.
“I'm not sure where this style came from, but I think it's a result of 2020 DIY projects.
“While this style is very playful, it can also read very adolescent if you're not careful.
“Over the last year, we've seen a lot of furniture come out in this design style, and I wouldn't recommend wasting your money on this.
“Because I don't think it's a design style that's gonna last very long.
“We want to go for timeless design and quality furniture that's gonna last a long time.”
Fans loved his quick tips, with his list gaining more than 12,700 likes and 170,400 views.
Known online as @want.zamora, Marco regularly shares interior design tips and home transformation ideas with his 320,100 followers.
In the comments, TikTokkers shared their reactions, with one writing: “Boucle is the new crushed grey velvet.”
“I wish I heard this before I put molding on my textured wall lol,” shared another.
A third agreed: “The squiggly furniture/ decor can gooooooooooo.”
Although not all were convinced, with another commenting: “Boucle just looks like the way my cats have ruined my sofa with scratching.”
“Big disagree on the moulding,” suggested someone else.
“Boucle throw pillow covers are a great way to get the vibe without spending $$$,” recommended one other.
