A strike by taxi drivers employed by several app-based ride-hailing platforms is underway in Chennai, Tamil Nadu State, until at least Oct. 17. Drivers also plan to stage a protest at the Rajarathinam Stadium from 09:00 Oct. 18; a few hundred participants are likely. Drivers demand a ban on motorcycle taxis, increased metered fares, and the removal of selected toll plazas. The action may also involve autorickshaws associated with the platforms. A prolonged strike and/or additional gatherings are possible.
The actions will likely result in an increased demand for alternative means of transport, especially during peak hours, including to key destinations like the Chennai International Airport (MAA). A heightened security presence is possible around the planned gathering. Localized transport disruptions may occur near the protest venue if participants hold vehicle processions or block nearby roadways. Minor scuffles are possible if activists defy security restrictions or orders to disperse.
Confirm public and private transport schedules through at least Oct. 18. If necessary, seek alternative means of transport and make bookings well in advance. Exercise caution around protests as a standard precaution. Heed all security and traffic advisories. Leave the area at the first sign of a security disturbance.
