Happy Govardhan Puja 2023 Wishes: Govardhan Puja is celebrated in some regions of India to commemorate the Govardhan Parbat, which is touted to have saved the lives of several people from incessant rains. Legend has it that Lord Krishna defeated God Indra or the lord of the rains and saved the people of Gokul from the wrath of God Indra.
While most of the time, Govardhan Puja day falls the next day after Diwali Puja, sometimes, there might be a one-day gap between Diwali and Govardhan Puja. This year too, there is a gap with Govardhan Puja falling on November 14, 2023 after Diwali on November 12.
Govardhan Puja is also known as Annakut Puja. It is considered highly auspicious to eat food made of cereals like wheat, rice, curry made of gram flour, and leafy vegetables which is cooked and offered to Lord Krishna.
In Maharashtra, Govardhan Puja is celebrated as Bali Pratipada or Bali Padva which commemorates the victory of Vamana, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, over King Bali and the subsequent pushing of Bali to Patal Lok (the underworld). Owing to the boon given by Lord Vamana, Asura King Bali visits the Prithvi Lok from the Patala Lok on this day.
Notably, most of the time Govardhan Puja Day coincides with Gujarati New Year Day.
