Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who recently tied the knot with Telugu actor Naga Chaitanya, is back on the Kollywood screens this week with Mersal. Here is everything you need to know about Samantha.
Born and raised in Chennai’s Pallavaram, Samantha was a commerce student at Stella Maris College. She was also working part-time as a model which led to film opportunities.
She made her debut with Gautam Menon’s Ye Maaya Chesave, where coincidentally she was paired against Naga Chaitanya, her now off-screen beau. The film went on to be a massive hit with the couple’s onscreen chemistry much talked about. The film was remade in Tamil as Vinnai Thandi Varuvaaya where Samantha had a small cameo.
The doe-eyed-beauty’s next release was Baana Kathadi in Tamil which also fetched her good feedback for her performance. She was next seen in delayed Moscovin Kaveri, which was the first movie she had signed.
However, Samantha earned a ticket to the big league with Mahesh Babu’s Dookadu, a massive hit. Following a couple of guest roles, SS Rajamouli’s Eega (Naan E in Tamil) cemented her as a successful heroine in the Telugu industry. With a role equal to that of the male lead Nani, the film was a blockbuster in both languages earning her much laurels. Then came Yeto Vellipoyindhi Manasu in 2012 (Neethaane en pon vasantham in Tamil), another bi-lingual from Gautam Vasudev Menon. While the movie received mixed reviews, her performance as Nithya was much appreciated. For the next two years, the model turned actor did not have any Tamil releases while she did a couple of guest roles and Ramaiyya Vasthavaiyya.
An important movie in her career Manam happened where she shared screen space with several members from the Akkineni family. The film starred Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Nagarjuna, Naga Chaitanya, Akhil Akkineni along with Samantha. A massive hit, the film earned her much appreciation and awards for her dual role in the story that transcends through three generations.
After Manam, the actor chose to be part of several commercial films including her comeback to Tamil, Anjaan. Already an established heroine in Telugu, Samantha then went on to share screen space with the leading heroes including Vijay, Vikram, Suriya and Dhanush. After a few forgettable roles in commercial vehicles, her Telugu film A Aa with Nithin proved to be a comeback for her as an able performer.
The busy actor who has said that she will continue acting post her wedding is part of several big projects. She has Atlee-Vijay’s Mersal in the pipeline along with Irumbu Thirai starring Vishal and Arjun and Super Deluxe directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja starring Vijay Sethupathi. She is also part of an untitled comedy film with Sivakarthikeyan, directed by Ponram.
