The quaint village of Thatchankurichi, nestled in the Pudukottai district of Tamil Nadu, is poised to host the state’s inaugural jallikattu event of 2024 on January 6. This time-honored tradition of bull-taming is a significant part of the village’s New Year festivities, leading up to the grand Pongal festival. The Tamil Nadu government has recently extended its approval for this event, adding to the anticipation.
With the stage set for jallikattu, preparations are underway at a brisk pace. The arena is being laid out, and the vaadivaasal – the point where the bulls are released – is being readied, signaling the onset of an exciting spectacle. The event is being organized with financial support from the Ilaya Narpani Mandram, a local community group, reflecting the spirit of collective effort.
Bulls from diverse districts, including Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Madurai, Theni, and Sivanganga, are set to make their mark in the event. Their participation underlines the widespread appeal and regional pride associated with jallikattu.
The Pudukottai district administration has outlined Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the event. The emphasis on safety measures such as double barricades to prevent audience intrusion, a VIP stage, and a collection point demonstrates the administration’s responsibility towards ensuring a safe and orderly event.
Participants, including the bulls and tamers, will undergo medical screenings, reflecting the importance given to health and safety. The issuance of online tokens for the event and a physical inspection of the venue are also part of the preparations. The Public Works Department will issue a stability certificate for the venue, underscoring the commitment to safety.
Teams from the Animal Husbandry and Health Department will be present on-site to ensure the well-being of the participants. Their presence signifies the importance of animal welfare in the conduct of the event. Additionally, police deployment will be in place to maintain order, ensuring a peaceful celebration of tradition and courage.
Inspired by Thatchankurichi, other villages within the Pudukottai subdivision have also submitted requests for permission to conduct their own jallikattu events, underscoring the deep cultural significance of this ancient sport.
