This ward is surrounded by water channels. Yet, inundation remains a major issue during monsoon in Ward 95, one of the big wards in Anna Nagar Zone.
With Anna Nagar bus depot on one side and the ICF traffic junction on the other as its limits, the ward comprises many residential localities in Anna Nagar West and Villivakkam, abutting Inner Ring Road, New Avadi Road and Chennai Tiruvallur High Road.
The lack of proper stormwater drains and poor maintenance of the channels took a heavy toll on people’s lives during last year’s rain.
For several years now, residents of localities such as Agathiar Colony and Ponvizha Nagar along TVS canal has been complaining of pollution and stench.
The canal bringing floodwater from the Ambattur industrial estate travels two km and joins Otteri Nullah in Anna Nagar West.
“Many of us have shut windows facing the canal as the stench becomes unbearable. I often have to get electronic goods like AC repaired. We have been demanding that the canal be desilted and prevent sewage pollution,” said T.V. Vinod, a resident of Agathiar Colony.
Similarly, people of areas like Thendral Colony want Otteri Nullah to be desilted before the northeast monsoon. While work is on to construct stormwater drains in places like the 18th Main Road, residents of Vasantham Colony abutting the road want the work to be completed soon.
With 18th Main Road and 21st Main Road being the key links to many schools, motorists complain that vehicles parked on either side add to the congestion. The ward also houses the abandoned Anna Nagar railway station.
In Villivakkam too, lack of proper stormwater drains poses a major problem in areas such as High Court Colony and Reddy Street. A. Srinivasan of High Court Colony said sewage overflow is common as sewer system is overloaded with floodwater. “Steps must be taken to retrieve a pond encroached upon by commercial establishments. Roads that have shrunk due to encroachments must be widened,” he said.
Residents of Villivakkam also complained of poor street illumination on interior roads, in places like Thirumalai Nagar and also erratic garbage clearance. Even the busy ICF traffic junction is poorly lit.
AIADMK councillor A. Fathima said measures are being initiated to provide better stormwater drain network in the vulnerable areas. “Work will be completed within two months. While desilting of Otteri Nullah will begin next month, TVS canal will be improved at a cost of Rs.35 lakh. Nearly 90 per cent of the roads have been relaid so far and parks are getting spruced up,” she said.
