The fishermen had set sail on three mechanised boats.
The Sri Lankan Navy on Thursday arrested 13 fishermen of Pudukottai district for trespassing into the waters of the island nation.
Coastal Security Group sources said that the fishermen had put out to sea on three mechanised boats from Jagadapattinam and Kottaipattinam coastal villages on Wednesday. They were apprehended around 1 a.m., while fishing near Neduntheevu.
The arrested fishers are – R. Selvakumar, S. Vijayapriyan, S. Vijayaprakash, P. Kasiraja, V. Sekar, I. Manikandan, V. Subhash, R. Rahmathullah, M. Thirumurugan, K. Chandrasekar, M. Manikandan, P. Karthik, and M. Jayakumar.
They were taken to the Kankesanthurai harbour in the island nation, the sources added.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin wrote to Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar, requesting to activate appropriate diplomatic channels to ensure the immediate release of all the arrested fishermen and their boats.
“Our fishermen, who depend on the sea for their livelihood, face an unprecedented crisis. Currently, the Sri Lankan authorities have detained 173 fishing boats and 80 fishermen, causing severe distress to their families,” Mr. Stalin said in the letter.
He sought strong and coordinated efforts by the Centre to address the issue at the earliest.
Condemning the incident, PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss, in a statement, pointed out that this was the second such arrest by the Sri Lankan Navy this month. The arrest of fishermen had become a frequent occurrence, he said.
