Polling in Tamil Nadu took place in the first phase of the Lok Sabha election, scheduled on April 19, when all 39 of the State’s constituencies voted. The total voter turnout from the total 6,18,90,348 electors in the State was 69.72%.

Competition in the State is between the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), with Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leading the bloc in Tamil Nadu, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led alliance and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
In Tamil Nadu, time for Congress to answer wake-up calls
The AIADMK-led Alliance has AIADMK contesting 32 seats and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) contesting 5 seats. The AIADMK and BJP were in alliance until September of 2023, when the two parties split. The NDA primarily consists of the BJP, contesting 19 seats, and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), contesting 10 seats. The Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have also fielded candidates in all 39 of Tamil Nadu’s constituencies.

PMK registered 1,44,565 votes, while the DMK was closing in with 1,31,145 votes.

The NOTA option has received a consistent patronage from the electorates in Thanjavur Parliamentary Constituency in first four rounds of counting.
On an average the NOTA clocked 650 votes per round at the end of the fourth round.
It received 663 hits in the first round, 645 in the second, 625 in the third and 667 in the fourth.

At the end of Round One in Chennai South Constituency, DMK’s Thamizhachi Thangapandian leads with 27,993 votes . BJP’s Tamilisai Soundararajan has got 14,845 votes.
Though the EVMs were opened around 8.45 a.m., there was a delay in the compilation of votes for Round One. This was because one of the EVMs in the Sholinganallur counting hall was faulty. “We have taken it for repair and will be fixed before noon. The counting and consolidation of votes polled so far is underway. We are hoping to finish the counting of postal ballots by around 2 p.m.,” one of the officials of Election Commission said. – Sunitha Sekar

At the end of round 3 of counting, DMK’s A. Raja leads BJP’s, L. Murugan by 31,665 votes in Nilgiris parliamentary constituency. Mr. Raja has so far garnered 70,415 votes, as opposed to Mr. Murugan’s current tally of 38,750 and the AIADMKs Lokesh Tamilselvan’s tally of 29922. – Rohan Premkumar

Tension prevailed for a few minutes at the Tirunelveli parliamentary constituency counting centre as the keys of the locks of the strong room in which the EVMs used in Ambasamudram Assembly segment and the lock put on the way for candidates’ agents to the counting hall were lost.
Protesting it, some of the agents picked up argument with the officials.
While the keys of the strong room were brought within a few minutes to open the room to take the EVMs on time, the officials had to break the locks on the agents’ way leading to the counting hall. – P. Sudhakar

Counting of 4,078 postal ballot votes is underway at Anna University. With heavy police protection in the midst of candidates, the counting of postal ballots for the South Chennai constituency began around 8.20 a.m. at the Anna University, which is one of the designated counting centres.
