A pall of gloom descended on Pamban, the coastal town in Ramanathapuram district, following the death of two fishermen on Saturday.
According to the Fisheries Department, after the 61-day ban on fishing ended on June 14, many fishers from the district had put out to sea.
Among them were five fishermen from the Mandapam north jetty, who had ventured into the sea on Friday noon, without obtaining the mandatory token from the department. Around 4 a.m. on Saturday, some fishermen spotted a mechanised boat sinking, five to eight nautical miles from the shore. They rushed to the spot and rescued two persons: Mohamed Hanifa, 52, and Arockia Prasath, 37.

Indian Coast Guard personnel, who launched a search, along with others, spotted two bodies five nautical miles off the shore around 10 a.m. and brought them back to the shore. The deceased were identified as Barakathullah, 49, and Arockiam, 53, of Pamban. The bodies were sent to the Ramanathapuram Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem. A search is under way to locate the fifth fisherman, Kaleel Mohamed, 42.
Fishermen leaders in Pamban said the boat of the five fishers had developed a snag and sunk.
