RDA has expanded its team with the recent addition of Andy Brooker as senior designer.
After working for the past six years as a restaurant designer for a firm in Bristol, Mr Booker relocated to Newcastle to take up the position.
“I became aware of the quality of RDA’s work when I came across some drawing packs they’d done for a Costa project,” he explained.
“I could just tell they knew what they were doing. So, I stalked them on social media and wasn’t disappointed. It was clear they’re an energetic, dynamic, and forward-thinking business.”
Prior to his restaurant design work, Mr Brooker studied architecture at Plymouth University in a pivot that saw him leave his long-standing career as a professional chef.
After working in kitchens for 20 years, he decided to channel his creativity into design, and went to university as a mature student.
Following his graduation, he saw an opportunity to become a restaurant designer as the perfect blend of his experience on the ground with his creativity.
“I really like the fact that I can draw on my first-hand experience in kitchens when I design them. Chefs work long hours, sometimes not seeing the light of day. It can really affect their mental health. So, when I design kitchens, I never block out natural light.”
Mr Brooker adopts a holistic approach to his design. He starts with the end-user in mind and considers how they fit into their team and the business as a whole. It’s the same ethos that attracted him to RDA, he said.
“There’s no stuffy hierarchy at RDA. We work together as a team, and we listen to each other. We collaborate to bring the best service to our clients. Everyone is so friendly – and not just at RDA. It’s something I’ve really noticed about the North East.”
RDA director, Nick Bradley, commented: “Andy brings valuable first-hand insights from his time as a chef. That and the fact that he’s a talented designer make him perfect for understanding our clients’ needs.”
