MOST of us spend a lot of time in our kitchens – so when you’re thinking of renovating, it’s vital to make sure the layout is as practical as possible.
Architect Georgina Wilson has shared five of the biggest design blunders people make to help you ensure there are no hiccups when it comes to creating your own dream kitchen.
Aussie architect Georgina regularly shares tips on her favourite design features – and those she suggests avoiding – with her 120,000 TikTok followers.
Her first warning is about what she calls the “outdated 1950s kitchen triangle” of sink, fridge and stove.
The fusty design, which involves ensuring the three features are all close to each other and set out in a triangle formation, was useful in past decades because these were the most used appliances.
But now we have so many more gadgets to choose from, Georgina says the real “kitchen triangle” to prioritise is bins, kitchen and dishwasher, because these are the places that you’ll move between the most.
The designer’s second snippet of wisdom is to “never put pendant lights over your kitchen island”.
She says the dangly lighting means “it looks like a warming station”.
Her next tip is to avoid scrimping on a small dishwasher, because you’ll end up with plates everywhere and a constantly overflowing sink.
She suggests that for busy families, a commercial dishwasher may well be a worthwhile investment.
“They are definitely more expensive,” she confesses, “but you can’t put a price on a three-minute cycle.”
The fourth word of caution is against prioritising cupboards over drawers.
“Drawers provide much better capacity and access,” she suggests, and if you make sure your kitchen has plenty there’s no need for high-up cupboards that are a total faff to reach.
Her final tip is to never put a sink or hob on a kitchen island, however much it might make socialising easier.
You’re ruling out a whole “extra dining table for when the entire family comes over” by doing so, she explains.
The helpful video racked up a whopping 2.9 million views, with users flooding the comments with appreciation for her helpful tips.
One viewer told Georgina: “I’ll never unsee the warming station… Thank you for saving me from that.”
Another confessed they’d committed one of the faux pas themselves, commenting: “Thank you! I hate having my sink in my island—you can never hide a mess from guests!”
