Series 5, Ep. 1/8
Arriving in Brighton ten novice interior designers meet each other for the first time. For their first big commercial challenge, series host Alan Carr sends them off to a former convent in Norfolk where they must transform former nuns’ cells into single bed B&B bedrooms to raise money for a charity that provides former homeless people with accommodation and meaningful employment.
The designers need to demonstrate their signature style and judge Michelle Ogundehin, with the help of interior designer Abigail Ahern, decides who will wins ‘Stand out Space’ and who will be the first to leave.
The revamped B&B rooms will create an extra income stream for the charity and will provide employment for the former homeless workers. As well as the B&B rooms, the charity has an on-site charity shop. The designers are tasked with purchasing at least one second-hand item of furniture from the shop and incorporating it into their design.
As well as considering the practicalities and comfort required for a small B&B space, the designers must create an unforgettable short stay experience that showcases their signature style and which also takes inspiration from the beautiful gothic building and bucolic surroundings.
Challenge over, the designers return to Brighton to hear the verdict. It’s relief and celebrations for seven designers while three designers have to face Michelle on the sofa and explain their design decisions. Once the first elimination takes place, just nine designers remain to face the next tough design challenge in episode two.
