The self-defence training programme held for women employees of the Bangalore Metropolitan Corporation (BMTC) began on Thursday. The initiative, under the Nirbhaya Scheme comprises sessions held for a total of 64 hours across 32 days, a statement mentioned.
Around 3,000 employees are expected to benefit from the scheme. The state and central governments have spent Rs 1.8 crore at a 40:60 share for the initiative.
The Supreme Court on Thursday modified bail conditions of former Karnataka minister and mining baron Gali Janardhan Reddy who is accused in a multi-million illegal mining case. Reddy can now visit and stay in Ballari district. The court however directed him to intimate SSP of District of Ballari, Kadapa and Anantpur upon his visit.
Pre-university colleges (for classes equivalent to XI and XII) in Karnataka have been asked to conduct online and offline classes at 50% student capacity after the state permits offline classes from next Monday (August 23).
As per the standard operating procedure (SoP) issued by the Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE), pre-university (PU) colleges have been asked to divide students into separate batches for offline and online classes. “This rule will be applied primarily to PU colleges with a student strength exceeding 100,” a DPUE official told The Indian Express. The Karnataka High Court Thursday directed the state government to take measures to offer compensation to the parents of a teenager who succumbed to electrocution after a pole he was carrying to hoist the national flag for Independence day celebrations at a school came in contact with a live wire.The incident had taken place at a school in Karikere village early morning on Sunday, with the deceased, identified as Chandan (15), getting electrocuted with a couple of others who helped them carry the metal pole to hoist the national flag at the school he studied at, ahead of the Independence day celebrations. The others who were injured have been under treatment at Shridevi Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Hospital, Tumakuru. Read more

Owing to engineering works being carried out in connection with Limited Height Subway between Vizianagaram – Korukunda and Dusi – Ponduru sections on August 23, the East Coast Railway has notified that Guwahati – Bangalore Cantonment Tri- Weekly Special will be delayed by six hours.
Train No. 02510 Guwahati – Bangalore Cantonment Tri- Weekly Special running via Perambur, Arakkonama, Katpadi and Jolarpettai, which is scheduled to leave Guwahati at 06.20 hours on August 22 is rescheduled to leave Guwahati at 12.20 hours the same day.
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), a public sector aircraft company, will be bidding to sell 18 LCA Mk1 A fighter aircrafts to the Royal Malaysian Air Force in the light of Malaysian authorities showing interest in the indigenous fighter planes, HAL chairman R Madhavan said Wednesday.
HAL will respond to a Request for Proposal (RfP) from the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) in the third week of September, the HAL chairman said. Malaysia has shown interest in the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk-1A and India stands a good chance in bagging the deal, Madhavan added.
“There are many countries which are showing interest in LCA Mk-1A. Malaysia has issued the RfP and we are responding to it. It has to be sent in the third week of September. We stand a very good chance. There are eight more contenders including US, China and Russia,” Madhavan said. Malaysia is looking at procuring 18 aircrafts with the probability of a follow up order of 18 more, he said.

The Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana Wednesday officially notified its recommendation of nine names for appointment as judges to the top court.
If the recommendations are accepted, three more judges could be added to the line of succession for the CJI’s post — till mid-2028 — including what could be the first woman CJI.
As The Indian Express reported Wednesday, Justice B V Nagarathna of the Karnataka High Court could become the first woman CJI. The other two on the list who could become CJI are Justice Vikram Nath, Gujarat High Court Chief Justice; and Senior Advocate P S Narasimha. However, all three are likely to have relatively short tenures.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 1,365 new cases of COVID-19 and 22 deaths, taking the total number of infections to 29,33,192 and death toll to 37,061. The day also saw 1,558 discharges, pushing the total number of recoveries to 28,74,839.
Bengaluru Urban accounted for 327 new cases, as the city saw 318 discharges and 2 deaths. Active cases stood at 21,266. While the positivity rate for the day stood at 0.76 per cent, case fatality rate (CFR) was at 1.61 per cent.
Dakshina Kannada and Mysuru accounted for three deaths each, Belagavi, Bengaluru Rural, Bengaluru Urban, Tumakuru and Udupi (2 each), followed by others. After Bengaluru Urban, Dakshina Kannada accounted for the second highest of fresh cases at 68, Mysuru 123 and Hassan 107.
Bengaluru Urban district has a total of 12,33,839 positive cases, followed by Mysuru 1,74,890 and Tumakuru 1,18,763. Among discharges too, Bengaluru Urban tops the list with 12,09,965, followed by Mysuru 1,71,519 and Tumakuru 1,16,960.
Cumulatively, 4,13,32,380 samples have been tested in the state, out of which 1,79,016 were tested on Wednesday alone. (PTI)
The Karnataka government has decided to test various health parameters of its over 1.5 crore population of children ahead of an anticipated third wave of Covid-19. According to Health and Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar, the ‘Arogya Nandana’ initiative will be launched by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai within a week.
“While over 1.5 crore children in the state will be subjected to tests, this will help us identify children with low immunity and other co-morbidities. They will then be provided with nutritious food and supplements to boost their immunity and their health will be constantly monitored,” Sudhakar said.
With Anganwadis remaining closed, the government has come up with a micro plan including Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers and Anganwadi teachers, who have collated information on children in each village (ward in rural areas) aged up to 18. The medical officer from the concerned primary health centre along with the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) mobile team will then decide on a date and venue at each village where the health screening activity will take place.

The expressway linking Bengaluru with Mysuru Expressway is expected to be fully functional by September 2022, Mysuru MP Pratap Simha said on Wednesday.
“As much as 81% of the work under Package 1 (Bengaluru to Nidaghatta) and 72% under Package 2 (Nidaghatta to Mysuru) has been completed,” Simha stated.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) project is estimated to cost Rs 8,066 crore.

The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) has issued the timetable for the SSLC (Class 10) supplementary examinations. They are scheduled to be held for two days, on September 27 and 29.
While students will attend a combined paper with multiple choice questions on Mathematics, Science and Social Science on September 27, the same format shall be followed for the three language papers on September 29, an official notification clarified.
A Bengaluru teenager’s addiction to mobile gaming cost his father Rs 4.8 lakh, after the boy was cheated with offers of attractive online games.
According to the police, the victim is a private firm employee and resident of Akshayanagar near KR Puram. His 15-year-old son was addicted to Free Fire, an online multiplayer mobile game, through which he met a person called Lakshmi Bai.
An officer said Lakshmi Bai introduced the boy to more online games. In July, she asked him to download some paid games, and sent him a link for the payment. The teen, who often used his father’s phone and a bank account linked to the number, shared the One Time Password (OTP) received on the phone with Lakshmi Bai.

As many as 18,415 candidates are expected to attend the second year pre-university (II PU equivalent to Class 12) examinations that begin from Thursday. The exams are scheduled to end on September 3.
As per data shared by the Department of Pre-University Education (DPUE), a majority of the takers (17,469) are those who have enrolled as private candidates.Of the remaining 946 candidates, 593 are freshers and another 353 are repeaters who chose to reject the scores allocated by the department.
Officials have clarified earlier that they would not get a chance to revert to the marks they attained earlier. The examinations will cover 30 subjects with candidates attending them at 187 centres across the state. However, the department had informed earlier and are keen on allowing students coming from Maharashtra and Kerala to submit a negative RT-PCR test report to be permitted to take the exams, officials added.

Local residents impeded ongoing survey work at Abbigere and Singapura lakes being carried out by the BBMP. The BBMP officials said that though they go with the home guard to avoid any eventuality, the presence of uniformed personnel does not deter the residents.
BBMP has issued a tender to develop Mallathahlli Lake at a cost of Rs 51 crore. However, the plans of the civic agency to include railway tracks, hanging bridge and a glass house inside a lake bed have been met with derision from environmentalists.

With as many as 796 teachers yet to get their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in Karnataka’s Mysuru, a special drive to inoculate them began on Wednesday.
According to officials, nearly 200 of them were jabbed on Wednesday, with the others expected to be covered by Saturday. “We plan to inoculate all of the 9,142 teachers and other supporting staff at government, aided and unaided schools with at least one dose before August 23 (when schools are set to reopen for offline classes),” the official said.
As per data shared by the department, 5,875 teachers have been fully vaccinated while another 2,617 have recieved the first dose, as on August 18.
A federal court in the United States has allowed investors in the start-up firm Devas Multimedia to identify assets of the Indian Space Research Organization’s commercial arm Antrix Corporation to attach them for recovery of a $1.3 billion compensation award made by an international arbitration tribunal over a failed 2005 satellite deal.
The US court for the western district of Washington has provided a limited amount of protection from attachment of assets as sought by Antrix Corporation in a counter to the Devas investors’ plea.

With the Karnataka government taking several measures to begin implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP) at colleges across domains in the state from the upcoming academic year (2021-22), funding from the industry and related organisations towards academia is expected to be enhanced as well.
According to Minister for Higher Education, IT, BT, Science & Technology, Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, and Livelihood C N Ashwathnarayan, the government will focus on systematic implementation of the policy.
“The government will focus on systematic implementation of NEP and seeks CSR funds from industry and donations from organisations towards this. The NEP strengthens the education system by eliminating the previously-existing rigidities, granting autonomy to institutions and becoming more flexible,” he explained.

In a tragic incident, a 39-year-old woman was killed after she came under a speeding car in front of a hospital, minutes after her son died by suicide on Wednesday.
The deceased have been identified as Leelavathi and her son Mohan Gowda (18) a first year B.Com student.
The Bengaluru police reunited a 38-day-old baby boy with his mother after he was sold by her boyfriend to a childless couple.

Yadgir rural police registered FIR after one of the followers of the Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, New and Renewable Energy Bhagwanth Khuba opened fire in the air while welcoming him to the town. The incident took place during Janaashirvadha Yatra on Wednesday.

In annother case, village accountant in Hassan district KS Hariprasad was caught collecting a bribe of Rs 20,000 in sanction of a land under Akrama- Sakrama sceheme of state government. He had demanded Rs 30,000 bribe.
An air-conditioning technician belonging to Udupi district in Karnataka returned home Wednesday after spending 604 days in a prison in Saudi Arabia on charges of defaming the Crown Prince and a community on social media. Harish Begera, 34, faced life in prison or the death penalty, before a probe by the Udupi police found that impersonators were behind the post that landed him in jail.
A resident of Bijadi village, Bangera was arrested on December 22, 2019, in the Saudi city of Dammam where he worked. This was three days after he shared a Facebook post that supported the Indian government’s Citizenship (Amendment) Act and plans for a National Register of Citizens, drawing his employer’s ire.
“I released a video apologising for sharing the post. I did not, however, mention that it was specifically for the post which I had made, and later deactivated my Facebook account,” Bangera, who arrived in Bengaluru on Wednesday morning, told The Indian Express.

The Karnataka government on Wednesday appointed a senior IPS Officer as nodal officer to coordinate with the Central government to bring back residents of the state from Afghanistan.
“As there is a conflict situation in Afghanistan, to bring back Indians stranded there, the central government has already started a helpline. To coordinate with the central government and bring back Kannadigas safely from there, Umesh Kumar, IPS, Additional Director General of Police CID, Bengaluru, has been appointed as nodal officer,” an official notification said.
Stating that the officer will be coordinating with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) regarding residents of Karnataka in Afghanistan, an official statement from the government said, a control room has been established in this regard. Information may be sent to the following numbers and email id: 080-22094498 080-22942628, 9480800187, afghan_kar@ksp.gov.in, it said.
The information needs to be furnished are-informant name, contact number, address, relationship. Also name of persons staying in Afghanistan, their present location, occupation/purpose of visit, passport details, date of arrival in Afghanistan, it further said, adding that information may also be furnished directly to MEA.
