Rameshwaram, one of the cornermost parts of India, is a delightful place to get to know. The town holds a profound cultural and spiritual place in the hearts and minds of many Indians. Especially because the town’s root is deeply embedded in Hindu mythology, and exploring that is also a captivating experience.

For someone who is visiting the town for the first time, it’s impossible to ignore the natural beauty of the place. The tranquil atmosphere somehow adds to the natural beauty. From gorgeous shores to the temples and local lifestyle, everything about Rameshwaram is beautiful.

Rameshwaram is an island that’s situated in the Gulf of Mannar. Naturally, the town is blessed with a stunning coastline. The beaches here have golden sands and clear blue waters, perfect for a day out on the beach.

Dhanushkodi, also referred to as a Ghost Town, is a stunning beauty. Never knew that desolate can be this beautiful too. Dhanuskodi was once a thriving town until a cyclone in 1964 completely devastated it. What’s left of this erstwhile town includes a dilapidated railway station and walls of homes and churches.

The Adam’s Bridge or the Ram Setu is a series of limestone shoals and sandbanks that, quite interestingly, look like something that was supposedly built by Ram’s Vaanar Sena. Those who follow the Hindu mythology of Ramayana, believe that this is the remains of the bridge that was built to reach Sri Lanka (in order to rescue Sita). Adam’s Bridge is located just 10 km from Dhanushkodi Check Point.

This particular spot is called Arichal Munai, and this can be seen from Dhanushkodi. Here, one can clearly see the two colours of Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.

The Gulf of Mannar, surrounding Rameshwaram, is a biosphere reserve known for its rich marine biodiversity. The waters around Rameshwaram are home to a variety of marine life, including coral reefs, dolphins, and numerous species of fish.

The Pamban Bridge is no less than an architectural marvel. The bridge connects the island to the mainland, and offers breathtaking views of the Pamban Channel. There is also the Pamban Railway Bridge running parallel to the road bridge.

The waters around Dhanushkodi are also home to vibrant coral reefs. These coral reefs support various other marine species. There are boat tours that take you to these reefs for sightseeing.

The coastal setting of Rameshwaram allows visitors glorious sunset scenes and beautiful coastal village vibes. It is physically away from the hustle and bustle of the cities and big towns. There’s always the sound of waves and the gentle sea breeze.

As per Hindu mythology, Agnitheertham is where Agni, the God of fire, appeared in front of Ram to convince him of Sita’s purity. It is believed that this is also the place where Sita took a bath before offering prayers to the Hindu deity Shiva.
