At least 11 persons were killed in two separate explosions that took place at fireworks units in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district on Tuesday, police said.
Additionally, two women workers were rescued from the scene and admitted to the Srivilliputtur Government Hospital for treatment.
Police, fire and rescue service personnel were pressed into service to extinguish the flames.

“Seven charred bodies were recovered from the sudden blast at the fireworks unit in Rangapalayam, and their identities are yet to be established,” a senior police official told PTI.
While seven persons died in the firecracker unit in Rangapalayam, three persons who had been rescued from the unit also succumbed to their injuries. Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man identified as Vembu was killed after another fire accident at the firework unit in Kammapatti village.
While condoling the incident, Chief Minister M K Stalin announced compensation of Rs. 3 lakh for the families of the deceased, and Rs. 1 lakh for the grievously injured.
