Three hearing and speech impaired children died on Tuesday after a train ran over them while they were trying to cross the railway tracks at Urapakkam railway station in Chengalpattu. The children were identified as Suresh (15), Ravi (10) and Manjunath (11). The three children were in Urapakkam to spend the weekend with their cousin.
According to officials, the children were involved in playing near the tracks. When they tried to cross the track, a train which was approaching hit them and all three were killed on the spot, as reported by India Today.
The train was traveling between Beach Station and Chengalpattu.
A police officer said, “Of the three, the two brothers were deaf and dumb while the third one could not speak.”

At the time of the incident, the loco pilot saw the children playing near the track and honked to alert them. However, the children were unable to hear the honk due to their hearing impairment.
The Guduvancheri Police and Railway Police officers arrived on the scene and collected the bodies from the track. The parents of the children were also informed and the bodies of the children were taken to a government hospital for postmortem examination.
Their parents were daily wage earners in Chennai.
In the meantime, three unoccupied coaches of the Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) veered off the tracks close to suburban Avadi in Chennai on Tuesday. This occurrence led to a disruption in the train route, resulting in delays for several other trains. The incident occurred after the train left the Ananur shed and reached Avadi en route to the Beach station. Sources said that the train bypassed the Avadi station but derailed near the Hindu College station.
No deaths were reported in the incident.
