Heavy rainfall lashed Tamil Nadu on Saturday. According to the Chennai District Administration, all schools will be shut today due to the heavy rainfall forecast.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD)has issued an orange alert for Tamil Nadu warning directing government authorities to be on alert.
According to a regional meteorological centre in Chennai, the current spell of rainfall would last till 7 November, The Hindu reported.
As per the weather departments, a trough over the Bay of Bengal off the Tamil Nadu coast has triggered widespread rainfall in the southern state. The trough could influence rain up to very high intensity (11.5 cm to 20.4 cm) in districts including Coimbatore, Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, and Ramanathapuram on Saturday, The Hindu report added.
In the past 24 hours, many places in south Tamil Nadu have received a considerable amount of rainfall with Chidarambaram receiving 8 cm, the highest amount in the State for the day. Many other places received light to moderate rainfall until Saturday morning such as Meenambakkam, Madurai, Vellore, Thanjavur, Taramani, Villivakkam, and Pallikaranai in Chennai.
Additional Director General of Meteorology has projected an enhanced monsoon activity from Saturday but it would be intermittent and can be sunny during the day.
Chennai may get intermittent moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning till Sunday.
Meanwhile, 12 NDRF teams comprising 400 members have been deployed in Chennai to swiftly take up rescue work. Besides, the state government appointed monitoring officers in the 15 zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation and all districts, a TOI report mentioned.
Northeast monsoon has remained a deficit in Tamil Nadu this year. So far the state has received an overall rainfall of 12 cm, which is a deficit of 40% from the average of 19 cm. Districts like Chennai, Ariyalur, Chengalpattu, Krishnagiri, and Kallakurichi have experienced a shortfall in monsoon rain by over 70% so far, the English daily added.
