Three children with speech and hearing impairments were run over by a local train in Urapakkam, while they were crossing the track on Tuesday. The incident took place when they were proceeding to catch a train to reach Vandalur zoo.

The victims have been identified as J. Suresh, 15, his brother Ravi, 12, and Manjunatha, 11. All the three had speech and hearing impairments. Police sources said these boys were residing with their parents in Karnataka and studying there. They had come down to spend their holidays at their relative’s house in Selliamman Koil Street, Urapakkam. The boys had reportedly left their uncle’s house located a few yards from the railway track when he had gone out.
Police sources said the children had plans to visit the Vandalur zoo and other places in the city, and had walked on the tracks to reach the Urapakkam station to proceed to Vandalur. One side of the track is not fenced.
The local electric multiple unit (EMU) on the track towards Chengalpattu ran over them, crushing them.

On receiving the information, police personnel from the Government Railway Police, Tambaram reached the spot and conducted an investigation. The bodies were sent to Government Chromepet Hospital for post-mortem. The relatives of the boys wept inconsolably on seeing the mortal remains of the children.
Senior police officers of the Government Railway Police visited the spot and held preliminary enquiries.
